A Lazy Afternoon At The Esplanada Grill In Ipanema
Wind away a Sunday afternoon with a long leisurely lunch at the Esplanada Grill.
A favourite with well heeled locals, this stalwart of an institution is always buzzing at weekends because of its friendly, relaxed vibe. They don’t take reservations, but you can sample a traditional Caipirinha and tapas at the bar whilst waiting for a table. I recommend the pao de queijo (the famous Brazilian cheese bread), spicy meat croquettes served with a deliciously picante mustard and the prized Iberico Ham.
The wine selection is thoughtfully chosen for the discerning palate. For something by the glass try the ruby red Toscana Sangiovese, Carparzo. On the nose it is fruity, intense and spicy, with notes of ripe blackberries. For mains choose from over 30 cuts of perfectly grilled meats. Local favourites here are the sizzling hot sausages, the Picanha, Skirt Steak or Ancho (Rib-Eye). For the more adventurous they also serve up Ostrich, Cockerel and Wild Boar. There is an extensive list of sides to accompany your feast, rice dishes, potatoes any which way, and variations on the Brazilian farofa (a maize based dish). To top it off the service here is impeccable. I enjoyed The Esplanada Grill place so much that I will definitely be back.
